The Question of sedimentary layers

"Some 70% of the rocks at the earth's surface are sedimentary in origin" - Sedimentary Petrology by Maurice E. Tucker.

We are told that sedimentary rock strata were laid down one layer at a time in successive floods over millions of years. Some of these sedimentary deposits stretch over hundreds or thousands of square kilometers.

How were these strata formed? Did one film of sediment, maybe 0.5mm thick get laid down by a flood, then just stay put for a year or so until another flood brought in the next layer?? The next inflow of water would have to be moving fast enough to carry in the new sediment, and if it is, then that same velocity is sufficient to destroy the neatly laid down previous layer.

Blind Freddie can see problems here.
